Working in the corporate training field, it has become very clear that people become very stressed when they hold on to the negative perceptions they have of themselves. No one has taught us how to train our minds; not in schools, not in universities, not in the family. Understanding the mind, and the impact that thoughts have on health and relationships, brings a clarity that is vitally important. It is not the world outside that disturbs us, but the world we create in our own minds.
In fact, the word ‘control’ is not very useful. It is not beneficial to suppress thoughts with ‘control’ or force. It is better to think in terms of ‘management’ of the mind; changing thoughts, guiding them, and creating powerful and constructive thoughts. It is then that we become ‘masters of the mind’ – not slaves to the mind. In general, most people think too much, too fast – a massive drain on our energy. It is better to ‘think less, think slowly, and think goodness’.
The more we understand our minds, the more we are able to stay in silence and the more we develop our intuition. Then answers simply come to us, without the headache of trying to find them; confusion ends, and clarity begins.
The first step for all this work is to pause. This sounds easy, but is not. We have already trained the mind to act all the time, speak all the time. People tell me that when they try to pause, it feels like a battle because they have so much to do and pressing pause feels like a delay. They would rather just do what they need to do. In fact, we have become addicted to action; and to constantly worrying about, thinking about and talking about things that cause us stress. However, if there is a real wish to manage the mind, then taking a pause is essential.
The second step, once paused, is to observe. We can train ourselves to pause and observe what is going on in the mind, every day, at different moments. In conversation, in meetings, in crowded places, in family gatherings, we can pause the traffic of thoughts, step back and observe, without judgement or analysis – just internally pause. We can then see what comes to the surface. Then we can guide the thoughts to more powerful, productive ones. Most people I train, want to just go from lack of management to perfect management – like wanting to reach the top of a mountain without the climb; but it takes practice. The pause and observe steps are the foundation for the deeper work. It stops us from reacting and makes us reflect and then respond. It is just a matter of training. Start with the first thoughts on waking – observe them, without judgement. If they are negative or wasteful, change them into something positive and uplifting. It is our mind, no-one else’s – our awareness is the key to a powerful mind.
Meditation is the deeper aspect of managing the mind; of cultivating awareness. This fosters the consciousness of the soul. We move away from ‘role conscious’, ‘job conscious’, and become ‘soul conscious’. I am the conscious being, creating and guiding my thoughts. I am then able to experience peace, and that produces happiness, and with that emerges the energy to be full of love, compassion, and kindness for others.
When we are able to experience the energy of the soul, we become extremely powerful. In that awareness we can feel that there is another energy, another powerful intelligence, and we can connect with that intelligence, the Divine, God. We experience the reality of an ocean of peace and love. In silence we connect with that power, absorb those vibrations, and as we go about our daily lives, we share, consciously or not, those powerful spiritual vibrations with our communities. All this comes from the management of thoughts.
